What a weekend for Wellingborough Amateur Boxing Club.
Two of our young boxers stepped into finals at the New Era Box Cup — and both showed exactly what our club is about: courage, resilience, and development under pressure.
Larae Steps Up a Year
Firstly, huge respect to Larae.
With no entries in his category, Larae made the decision to step up and box a full year above his age group. At youth level, a 12-month age difference can be significant — physically, mentally, and in experience.
But he didn’t hesitate.
From the first bell, Larae boxed with composure, maturity, and confidence. He held his own throughout and made it a truly competitive final. The bout went to a razor-close 3–2 split decision, narrowly not in his favour.
While the decision didn’t go our way, the performance absolutely did. Stepping up like that builds character — and that experience will serve him massively moving forward.
We’re incredibly proud of him.
Bobby-Thomas Brings It Home
Secondly, Bobby-Thomas.
After securing his semi-final win the day before, Bobby returned to the ring for the final against a strong opponent with slightly more experience.
Once again, it was tight. Once again, it went to a 3–2 split decision.
This time, the result went our way.
Bobby-Thomas showed composure beyond his years, controlled the tempo well, and handled the pressure of a final brilliantly. Coming through two tough days of competition and lifting the win is a fantastic achievement and a testament to his hard work in the gym.
More Than Medals
At Wellingborough ABC, we celebrate the wins — but we value the growth just as much.
Larae stepping up.
Bobby holding his nerve.
Two finals.
Two split decisions.
Lessons learned.
Confidence built.
That’s what grassroots boxing is about.
A huge thank you to our volunteer coaching team who gave up their time across the week to support the boxers. Community sport runs on commitment, and we’re grateful to have a team that continues to show up.
Onwards and upwards for both lads.
The journey continues. 🥊
